Why Fevers are Fabulous: How to Manage Them Without Meds

Why Fevers are Fabulous: How to Manage Them Without Meds

by Sarah TheHealthyHomeEconomist
Child with a Fever
Many parents panic when their child has a fever. I did too the first time my child spiked a temperature of 102.5 F. It is a scary thing to hold your child and they are hot, flushed and obviously very uncomfortable.
It is important to learn ways to manage your child’s fever and not lower it artificially with over the counter medications. It would be best if you just threw these drugs away and don’t even have them in your medicine cabinet because even infrequent use of an over-the-counter drug like Tylenol has been linked with serious, lifelong illness like asthma.
Instead of panicking, honor your child’s fever and learn to use it constructively to improve your child’s health and vitality over the long term, because, believe it or not, fevers are fabulous and accomplish important things in a child’s developing body.
I am one of seven children, so we had a lot of fevers going around our home during cold/flu season. Despite this, my Father who is a retired Family Physician never brought them down.
Ever.
He taught us that bringing down a fever only prolonged the illness and weakened vitality for the next illness to come. I remember him saying, “No, I can’t bring down your fever because you’ll get sicker quicker and next time it will be worse.”
Repeated forced reduction of childhood fever has been linked to childhood cancer. And eliminating fever will usually cause a secondary infection. When you bring down a fever you start a domino effect toward antibiotic use. In other words, if you want to avoid antibiotics, don’t bring down the fever. Fever reduction suppresses the immune system. Your child is trying to get well himself with the fever and when you bring it down you are opening him up to a secondary bacterial infection that will further entrench the virus or bacteria. It cannot be stressed enough that fever has an important role to play in your child’s overall wellbeing.

Why Do We Get Fevers?

Why do our bodies produce fever? One reason is that fevers greatly slow down pathogens.  Fevers are a highly beneficial immune response that we suppress to our detriment.
The “germ” – bacteria or virus causing the child’s distress typically replicates every few minutes and the fever slows this process down. Fevers work to slow down the spread and severity of the illness and are your friend in avoiding a secondary infection (usually respiratory illness), a trip to the doctor and a script for antibiotics.
So when you bring the fever down you are giving free license to the virus or bacteria to spread in an unrestrained manner. And don’t panic if your child’s temperature gets to 102-103 F degrees—this is the ideal range for a fever.
I can’t tell you how many times my children have spiked a beautiful fever of about 102-103 F for a few hours with no other symptoms whatsoever. When the fever resolved, the illness was over.  No cough, no rash, sinus congestion, no nothing.  Just a fever and that’s it. I can almost guarantee that if I had forcibly brought the fever down with meds, they would have gotten a secondary illness on top of the fever – probably a cough or sinus congestion and the illness would have morphed from an afternoon of chills and discomfort into a two week ordeal with a trip to the doctor and prescription meds.

Managing a Fever With No Meds

I find that holding your child is the best home remedy for fever. When they are feverish, they want to be with you. Put on a light robe and crash on the couch with your child and hold her for hours if you need to. If you let the fever go and just let the child’s body do what it is trying to do, the fever won’t last very long – just a few hours.
You can take their temperature if you want to, but it is not necessary. Put your lips on your child’s forehead, and if the child seems hot, you know she has a fever. I can tell within a half a degree what the temperature is using this method with no thermometer required (which children typically find distressing to use when they are ill anyway). My dad taught me this trick—he never took our temperatures. He knew the temperature.
Sometimes a fever will go for three days. It will go up and down, with peaks and valleys, and it usually peaks about 4-6 in the afternoon. If your child has a fever in the afternoon followed by a good night’s sleep and no fever in the morning, that doesn’t mean he is over it. Don’t send him to school until you know what happens at 4-6 in the afternoon. The fever is likely to come back in a lot of cases. Until you’ve passed a late afternoon with no fever, your child is not yet on the road to recovery.

Should You Feed or Starve a Fever?

My father taught me that food will naturally drop a fever within about 20 minutes and this drop will last for an hour or two. My father always believed that it was fine to feed a child with a fever if the child was willing to eat. But don’t force food if he doesn’t want it. And you don’t have to give your child a lot of food. Just a few bites of scrambled egg or a few sips of homemade broth can bring that fever down a bit. It will not make the fever go away but will manage it hopefully within the ideal 102-103 degree range.
If a child’s fever is very high—over 103.5 degrees—then you need to take steps to bring it down down. A cool water enema is one good way to do this. Enemas have such a bad rap. Nobody likes them but they are a very effective remedy for many things. You can get an enema bag from any pharmacy for about ten dollars and they’re incredibly easy to administer. If the fever is getting really high, just get a thick beach towel and put it in the tub. Lay your child on his side without taking clothes off. Slide their pajamas down a little. Place 1/2 to 1 quart warm filtered water in the bag and insert the enema nozzle lubricated with a bit of coconut oil. Your child will start to feel pressure and will want to go to the bathroom—the water usually doesn’t run out. Then gently put him on the toilet and let him go. This will bring the fever down by a degree or two.
High fevers—those that range between 104 and 105 F—are not dangerous in themselves, but they make the metabolism run very fast and increase the risk of dehydration. Blood sugar often drops with the metabolism running at this high level, which can lead to convulsions. To prevent this, have your child sip fresh fruit juice diluted 50% with filtered water to keep tissues hydrated and blood sugar levels in the normal range. If your child is too lethargic or won’t take anything, you can administer about 4 ounces diluted fruit juice rectally using a $2 bulb syringe. Again, this is so easy to do!  The body will absorb it rectally very quickly. Don’t worry – it won’t run out and make a mess. This may save you a trip to the emergency room.
Fever also rapidly depletes vitamin A so be sure to give your child drops of fermented cod liver oil under the tongue while the fever is high.

Fever Baths To Hasten Healing

On the other hand, if your child is running a low-grade fever day after day and not seeming to get better, you can help her generate a higher fever to help resolve the illness more quickly by giving her a fever bath. Put her in the tub. Fill it with water as hot as she can stand. You can get it hotter for them if you put them in it while you are filling it. You want it pretty hot, but still comfortable. Leave her in the bath for 10-12 minutes, then get her out, dry her quickly and wrap her up tight. Put her into bed, well covered up. This should help the fever rise to the point where it can be effective in resolving the illness and by morning, she may have a normal temperature.

11 Reasons Why Flu Shots Are More Dangerous Than The Flu Itself

flu+shotThe verdict is out on flu shots. Many medical experts now agree it is more important to protect yourself and your family from the flu vaccine than the flu itself.
Every year the pharmaceutical industry, medical experts and the mainstream media work hard to convince us to get vaccinated against the flu.
But we’re not being told the whole story.
What we don’t hear, are cases about the adverse reactions or about the toxic chemicals being injected into us.
Read below:

11 reasons why flu shots are more dangerous than the flu itself.

Sources for this article include:

1. The flu shot actually makes you sick to begin with

Have you ever noticed how vaccinated children get sick almost immediately following a vaccination? This is because the flu virus is introduced into their bodies. So rather than immunize, the flu shot actually only sensitizes the body against the virus. And the fact that it causes individuals to get ill following a shot indicates immuno-suppression (i.e. lowering of the immunity).

2. Flu vaccines contain other dangerous ingredients such as mercury

The pharmaceutical industry, medical experts and the mainstream media are candid in telling us that flu vaccines contain strains of the flu virus. What they are less likely to reveal though is the long list of other ingredients that come with the vaccine. It is now a known fact that flu vaccines contain mercury, a heavy metal known to be hazardous for human health. Mercury toxicity can cause depression, memory loss, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory problems, ADD, oral health problems, digestive imbalances and other serious health issues.

3. The flu shot can cause Alzheimer’s disease

Evidence now suggests that flu vaccines can cause Alzheimer’s disease. Research conducted by Dr. Hugh Fudenberg, a leading immunogeneticist, shows that those who consistently get the flu vaccine increase their risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 10 fold. He believes this is due to the toxic combination of aluminum and mercury in the vaccine. Additionally, introducing the flu virus to an elderly person (who with age will naturally have a weaker immune system) will only increase the chances of that individual becoming susceptible to more serious illness.

4. The very people pushing flu vaccinations are making billions of dollars each year

In August 1999, the Committee on Government Reform initiated an investigation into Federal vaccine policy. This investigation focused on possible conflicts of interest on the part of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The investigation concluded that many individuals serving on two key advisory committees had financial ties to the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture vaccines. Often, these individuals were granted waivers to fully participate in the discussions that led to recommendations on vaccine licensing and adding vaccines to the Childhood Immunization Schedule. This in itself creates serious doubt as to how effective flu vaccines really are.

5. Lack of real evidence that young children even benefit from flu shots

51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months established no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo. Additionally, flu shots only protect against certain strains of the virus meaning that you can still easily get the flu if you come into contact with a different strain of virus.

6. Makes you more susceptible to pneumonia and other contagious diseases

For someone with an already suppressed immune system, injecting strains of the flu virus can have devastating consequences. If your body is already working to fight off a virus or simply operating with low immunity, a vaccine injection could put your body in serious danger of contracting influenza with stronger symptoms, or even worse pneumonia and other contagious diseases.

7. Vascular disorders

Medical research shows flu shots are associated with an increased risk of vascular inflammation. Symptoms include fever, jaw pain, muscle aches, pain and stiffness in the neck, upper arms, shoulder and hips and headache.

8. Children under the age of 1 are at risk

Children under 1 years of age are highly vulnerable to a neurotoxic breach of the delicate nerve center surrounding the brain and central nervous system. The first round of the flu vaccine is administered at age 6 months. A child under the age of 1 lacks sufficient protection to guard against premature damage to the blood barrier in the brain.

9. Increased risk of narcolepsy

There have been dozens of reported cases of children in 12 different countries who have developed narcolepsy (a chronic sleep disorder) after receiving the flu vaccine. The study, which took place between October 2009 and the December 2011, compared 3.3 million vaccinated Swedes with 2.5 million who were not vaccinated. The risk was found to be highest among the youngest people who took the vaccines. For those under the age of 21, the risk of contracting narcolepsy was three times higher.

10. Weakens immunological responses

There have been literally thousands of medical journal articles published that show injecting vaccines can lead to harmful immunological responses and a host of other infections. Moreover, weak immunological responses only decrease a person’s ability to fight the diseases that the vaccine was supposed to protect against in the first place.

11. Serious neurological disorders

Evidence now suggests that ingredients in flu vaccinations can actually cause serious neurological disorders. In 1976 a significant number of those who received the flu vaccine acquired Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a disorder characterized by permanent nerve damage and even paralysis. Flu vaccines can contain many harmful materials including detergent, mercury, formaldehyde, and strains of live flu virus.

Concussions

Concussions

Nearing the end of October, the NHL and NFL seasons are well under way. In recent months, both leagues have been under scrutiny over concussions suffered by players. Just this past September the NFL settled with their former players to the tune of $765 million. However, these issues aren’t just isolated to the professional paid athlete, but also prevalent in the amateur sports arena as well. Last year, there was an article written in the Globe and Mail onconcussions sustained by children playing Peewee hockey in Ottawa. However, sports aren’t the only avenues one can receive a concussion. Even without direct trauma to the head, whiplash from a car accident as innocuous as a fender bender can lead to a concussion. One of my biggest pet peeves occurs when a concussion gets labeled as a mild brain injury when in fact there is nothing mild about direct trauma to the brain.
concussion
That’s why it is so important to know the signs and symptoms. The following are just a few of the symptoms that concussions can appear as. Seek out a health professional if you have suffered from any of the following signs:
  • Headaches or feeling of pressure in the head
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Confusion or feeling of being in a fog
  • Amnesia around the traumatic event
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Fatigue
It is important to note that those signs and symptoms may not appear immediately but can also show up hours or even days later. Websites, such as the Mayo Clinic have good information about concussions and what to do about them.
While it’s always important to teach our children the proper techniques of tackling or checking another player, there will always be situations where traumas and unfortunately, concussions, will occur. That’s why awareness about concussions and the signs and symptoms should be widely recognized.

Doctors such as myself, are training in helping to improve your neurological health if you have a concussion or not.

I just had a patient present to my office after being hit in the back of her head by another women's LARGE purse. The impact was great enough, it send her glasses flying 15 ft from her. As a result, she had 6 of these symptoms. After properly evaluating her, she is currently getting the care she needs. Many of her symptoms are improving after just a few visits to my office.

Seek out a Doctor of Chiropractic for an evaluation today.

Thank you!

Warning Toxic Dyes In Vitamins Foods And More... Flintstone's on top of the list!

Check your vitamin for B12 Cyanocobalamin, it is a cheap, synthetic chemical made in the laboratory that is produced with cyanide. Low-end vitamin manufacturers use Cyanocobalamin to claim that their product contains vitamin B-12. They won’t tell you that this form of B-12 is bound to a toxic cyanide molecule that must then be detoxified from your body by your liver.
Cyanide, a known poison can causes a chemical change that keeps the oxygen from getting into your red blood cells. No matter how cyanide gets into your body, it works the same way. It can be inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through the skin or muscle. If you are exposed to small amounts of cyanide you will have the following symptoms, hair loss, restlessness and decreased ability to stay on task, : rapid breathing heartbeats, dizziness, weakness, headache, eye itching/burning, nausea/vomiting.
If you are exposed to a large amount of cyanide it can cause convulsions/seizures, very slow heartbeat, loss of consciousness, breathing cessation and death. Is this what you want in your vitamin given to your children too?
So why would companies use B12 Cyanocobalamin? because it is 100 times cheaper than Methylcabalamin. It’s all about the money and you the customer have the power to choose. You just need to be educated on Synthetic man-made TOXIC vitamin ingredients.
The powers that be have refused to take dangerous dyes out of your Vitamins, Food and
Cosmetics. Many of the Dyes are banned from use in other countries
Be sure to copy this link and email it to your family and friends: http://wp.me/p1Crrw-3L
What do Vitamins, strawberry Jell-O, orange Kool-Aid, raspberry soda, grape Popsicle’s, much candy and baked goods, most brands of ice cream, maraschino cherries, many snack foods, and most pet food have in common? They are laced with millions of pounds of cancer causing artificial coal-tar based Dyes with names such as Red 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Red 40.
In December 1984, Public Citizen Health Research Group petitioned FDA to ban the use of ten widely used food, drug or cosmetic dyes. On January 22, 1985, we sued the government to remove these dyes, all of which have been shown to cause cancer, from the market. The FDA has never found none of these dyes safe for all uses but all have remained on the market pending resolution of their “provisionally listed” status.

Children are eating TOXIC Dyes found in hundreds of foods including Vitamins. Take a closer look at the health dangers listed in the chart below:

This report was just posted June 14, 2012Ban Food Dyes? The FDA Says No
Against the wishes of many prominent public health advocates, an advisory panel for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided Thursday that there isn’t enough evidence to ban food dyes or require labels stating that some evidence exists linking food dyes to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). After a two-day hearing on food dyes at which a handful of doctors, researchers, and parents testified, the panel concluded that existing evidence between dyes and ADHD is weak and more research is needed.
The details: The FDA hearings took place on Wednesday and Thursday of this week at the behest of the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), which has been campaigning against food dyes for quite some time and wants to see them banned from foods and medications. “I have monitored the safety of food additives for almost 40 years, and food dyes have always stood out as the category with the most problems,” Michael Jacobson, PhD, executive director of CSPI and the lead author of a report on the hazards of synthetic food dyes, told Rodale.com in an interview last July.
But the FDA remains unconvinced by studies linking food dyes to a variety of problems, including hyperactivity in children, and said so in a report released prior to the hearings. “Based on the data reviewed in these publications, FDA concludes that a causal relationship between exposure to color additives and hyperactivity in children in the general population has not been established,” the panel of scientists wrote.
Many of the experts testifying before the FDA advisory panel seemed to agree that the science linking food dyes to ADHD is tenuous. But that research has been called into question. The CSPI’s July 2010 report on food dyes noted that most safety studies are conducted by industry. Another group represented at the hearing, the Feingold Association, a nonprofit organization helping parents avoid synthetic food additives (including dyes) to treat behavioral, learning, and health problems, noted that the studies used food that the studies used food-dye exposure levels far below what children are usually exposed to. Click here to read more

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Avoid using foods with artificial dyes (“artificial coloring,” “U.S. Certified colors”) such as the seven listed in the Table. Be sure to check the ingredients of all products purchased. Buy real fruit juices and make your own homemade juices using Organic grown fruits or vegetables for a healthy delicious green drink.

Kids with Seizures and Upper Cervical Subluxations

Kids with Seizures and Upper Cervical Subluxations

Epilepsy or Seizures are a problem for many Americans. Frequently a person will be prescribed medications to cover up the affects of the seizures. Many people do not want to just cover up the symptoms but try to find the underlying cause of the seizures and eliminate it. Seizure medications have serious side effects in many people including liver problems, blood disorders, rashes, and altered thinking patterns.
There have been a number of examples in the research of the positive effects of upper cervical chiropractic relating to epilepsy and seizures. Including the February 3, 2011 issue of the Journal Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research, in which a 9-year-old girl with Occipital Lobe Epilepsy was undergoing upper cervical chiropractic care. In this case, improvement was shown with specific chiropractic adjustments being rendered to the upper cervical (neck) spine.
The study notes that epilepsy is a condition characterized by two or more seizures, brief attacks of altered consciousness and abnormal motor activity. The worldwide population with epilepsy is estimated to be 10.5 million, 25 percent of whom are children under the age of 15.
A 9-year-old girl was brought to a chiropractor by her mother. The child was suffering with uncontrollable blinking of the left eye. She had been previously brought to a neurologist who diagnosed the girl with occipital epilepsy. The neurologist recommended an anti-convulsion medication but the girl’s mother decided to seek chiropractic care rather than subject her daughter to drug therapy.
The girl started suffering from uncontrollable eye blinking approximately two weeks before the visit to the chiropractor. Additionally, she had shown other associated symptoms including seizures, tics, spasms, dizziness, and fainting. Other conditions the patient suffered from included constipation, seasonal allergies, rashes, itching, and skin lesions.
A chiropractic examination was performed that included a variety of specific procedures including x-rays designed to look for misalignments (subluxation) in the upper cervical spine. These tests confirmed that the girl was a candidate for specific upper cervical chiropractic care, not to mention the rest of her spinal misalignments.

Amazing Results!

Within six days of the initial visit, the girl’s mother reported that the left eye blinking had decreased in frequency. Shortly thereafter, it was noted that her symptoms were progressively decreasing and were only present at night. After two months of care, the eye blinking had completely stopped. The blinking only returned once after that but disappeared again following another adjustment.
In his conclusion, the author summed up this case and explained how chiropractic can help those with epilepsy by saying, “The relationship between an upper cervical subluxation and epileptic conditions in children exists but remains elusive. Evidence from this case supports the elimination of the upper cervical subluxation in the resolution of occipital lobe epilepsy signs and symptoms. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder and it is the opinion of this author that it should be treated conservatively in children before medical and surgical intervention.”

Cervical Disk Herniation Patients Helped with Chiropractic

Cervical Disk Herniation Patients Helped with Chiropractic
A study published on August 14, 2013, in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics shows that chiropractic care helps patients with neck disc herniations.  The study was conducted in Switzerland on German speaking patients and was funded by a joint effort from the Uniscientia Foundation, the European Academy for Chiropractic, and the Balgrist Hospital Foundation.
The authors of the study report that compression of a nerve root from disc herniations in the neck severe enough to cause pain occurs in approximately 83.2 of every 100,000 persons.  Patients with herniated discs in the neck can have severe neck and arm pain along with muscle weakness in the arms and shoulders. The authors also emphasize that disc herniations seen on MRI are common, and many people do not have pain or symptoms of any kind.  They report that, "One study found that 63% of asymptomatic athletic males older than 40 years had protruding disks in the cervical spine." Most of these have no pain.
This study included German speaking patients in a chiropractic practice from January 2010 to April 2013 between the ages of 18 and 65 years.  Each patient had several orthopedic tests showing positive findings, and each had an MRI that confirmed the presence of a cervical disc herniation. Patients were asked to complete a questionnaire rating their pain where 0 is no pain and 10 is the worst pain imaginable for both the neck and the arm pain separately. They were also asked to rate their neck disability and rate their global change as care was rendered.
Care rendered was manual hand chiropractic adjustments which the researchers called Spinal Manipulative Therapy or "SMT."  Chiropractic care was given 3 to 5 times per week for the first 2 to 4 weeks followed by 1 to 3 times per week thereafter until the patient was free of pain.  Patients in this study did not have surgery, and no other therapies were performed.
The results of the study showed that of the 50 patients in the study, 55.3% of all patients reported that they were significantly improved after only 2 weeks of chiropractic care.  None of the participants reported being worse. After one month of care, 68.9% reported being significantly improved with one reporting being slightly worse. By the three month mark, 85.7% reported being significantly better and none were worse.
The researchers noted that the results showed positive changes that were greater than what is normally considered "clinically relevant." In their conclusion they wrote, "A high proportion of acute and most importantly subacute/chronic patients with MRI-confirmed symptomatic CDHs (cervical disk herniations) treated with high-velocity, low-amplitude cervical spine manipulation (manual chiropractic by-hand adjustments) reported clinically relevant improvement at 1 and 3 months after the first treatment. There were no adverse events reported for patients in this study."

Resolution of Pain and Breech Presentation Following Subluxation Based Chiropractic Care

Resolution of Pain and Breech Presentation Following Subluxation Based Chiropractic Care
From the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health on September 30, 2013 comes a case study documenting the correction of a breech pregnancy and the elimination of pain in a pregnant woman undergoing chiropractic care. A pregnancy is considered breech if the fetus is in the head up position in the last several weeks of a woman's pregnancy.
In this case, a 24-year-old woman went to the chiropractor in her 37th week of her pregnancy.  She was seeking a natural childbirth but was suffering from lower back pain, and leg pain.  The woman's obstetrician/gynecologist had diagnosed her as having a breech pregnancy and had scheduled a Caesarean procedure for the birth.
The woman had a history of lower back and leg pain that had started at the 29th week of her pregnancy. She described the pain as constant, burning, sharp, and tingling, with her leg pain being worse than her back. She reported that stretching seemed to help, but that normal activities such as sitting, standing, lifting, sleeping, and walking made the pain worse.
A chiropractic examination was performed, subluxations were determined to be present, and care was begun including the Webster Technique which was developed to help women with breech pregnancies. The Webster Technique was administered once a day for two days.
According to the patient, her fetus shifted from the breech to vertex position following the second visit, and was confirmed by ultrasound imaging. The study also reports that the woman's leg and back pain was reduced by 50% by the 5th visit and continued to reduce up untill her delivery.
In their conclusion, the authors summed up their results coupled with the growing body of evidence showing chiropractic helping pregnant women. They wrote, "We described the successful care of a pregnant patient presenting with pregnancy-related low back pain and leg pain concomitant with a breech presentation. This and other publications reviewed provide some measure of chiropractic effectiveness in the care of pregnant patients."

Untreatable: Today’s Drug-Resistant Health Threats

Untreatable: Today’s Drug-Resistant Health Threats
A release issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on September 16, 2013, is based on their report titled, "Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United States, 2013." The report sounds the alarm about the growing problem of drug resistant bacteria caused by years of overuse of antibiotics.
The CDC states, "Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die each year as a direct result of these infections."  The report also estimates that, "...in the United States, antibiotic resistance adds $20 billion in excess direct health care costs, with additional costs to society for lost productivity as high as $35 billion a year."
As a result, the CDC has instituted a warning system much like the terrorist threat system in the U.S. However, instead of the system being based upon colors, (green-blue-yellow-orange-red), the system has three levels defined as, "concerning, serious, and urgent."
The CDC release gives an overview explanation of the problem by noting, "The use of antibiotics is the single most important factor leading to antibiotic resistance around the world. Antibiotics are among the most commonly prescribed drugs used in human medicine. However, up to half of antibiotic use in humans and much of antibiotic use in animals is unnecessary or inappropriate."
The growth of antibiotic resistant bacteria is due to the rampant overuse of antibiotics, not only in humans, but also largely in livestock used for human consumption. In a September 18, 2013, article in Time, Dr. David Wallinga of Healthy Food Action states, "CDC has (quietly) said before that antibiotic overuse in food animals helps worsen the epidemic of infections from antibiotic resistant bacteria. But this important report practically shouts it from the mountain top."
A September 17, 2013, CNN article on this same report cited the Missouri Department of Health who explained the problem by saying, "Every time a person takes antibiotics, sensitive bacteria are killed, but resistant germs may be left to grow and multiply. Repeated and improper uses of antibiotics are primary causes of the increase in drug-resistant bacteria."

Drugged Driving Plays Major Role in Traffic Deaths

Drugged Driving Plays Major Role in Traffic Deaths
The title above comes from a September 27, 2013, article on HealthDay.com exposing the large number of accidents caused by drivers under the influence of prescription drugs. The article is based on research to be published in the upcoming November 2013 issue of Accident Analysis & Prevention.
In this study, researchers from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health analized the risk of a fatal crash associated with driver drug use, as well as the combination of drugs and alcohol. They found that drug use is associated with a significant increase in the risk of fatal crash, particularly when combined with alcohol.
The results of the research showed that drivers who tested positive for drugs were three times more likely to be involved in a lethal crash than those who tested negative. Depressant drugs were shown to be the highest category of drugs associated with a fatal accident. When the researchers looked at the statistics for drivers using alcohol and drugs they found that fatalities were more than 13 times higher for those who were alcohol-positive but drug-negative, and 23 times higher for those who tested positive for both alcohol and drugs.
The author, Dr. Li, professor of Anesthesiology at Columbia, notes, "The possible interaction of drugs in combination with alcohol on driving safety has long been a concern. While alcohol-impaired driving remains the greatest threat to traffic safety, these findings about drugged driving are particularly salient in light of the increases in the availability of prescription stimulants and opioids over the past decade."
Chiropractic has long been an alternative to drugs for people with many health concerns. "Chiropractic care offers an evidence-based, non-drug approach to effectively addressing many common conditions, and should be the first option of care," states Gerard W. Clum, D.C., spokesperson, Foundation for Chiropractic Progress. "Doctors of chiropractic (D.C.s) have the diagnostic skills and training to evaluate and provide appropriate care and rehabilitation, including counseling on nutrition, ergonomics and lifestyle. Evidence confirms that the care provided by a D.C. is linked with better clinical outcomes, greater patient satisfaction and noteworthy cost savings."
Dr. Braile, a past president of the International Chiropractors Association, commented, "Our society takes too many drugs. Numerous reports speak to the dangers of prescription drugs from side effects and long term health issues. Now, with the added knowledge of drugged driving and accidents, it is prudent that we turn to non-drug approaches to healthcare. Chiropractic is a drugless profession that, in light of this new study, offers additional public safety benefits."

Chiropractic Helps Child with Autism, Acid Reflux, Headache, Seizures, and Vomiting

Chiropractic Helps Child with Autism, Acid Reflux, Headache, Seizures, and Vomiting
The scientific periodical the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research published a study on September 12, 2013, documenting the case of a baby suffering from a long list of health issues who was helped by chiropractic. In this case, a 35-month-old girl was suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which included symptoms of headaches, epilepsy, behavioral and developmental delay, acid reflux, sleep disturbances, and vomiting, before being brought to the chiropractor.
The study authors define ASD by stating, "Autism is a condition often characterized by a failure to bond, lack of social interaction, avoidance of eye-to-eye contact, difficulties in language development, and repetitive behaviors known as 'stimming' (self-stimulation)."
The study reports that the young girl was very anxious when entering the office but became more calm after a few minutes. The girl's history revealed that she was born prematurely at 28 weeks, weighing 2 pounds, 5 ounces. Also, she was in the NICU for six weeks and came home on oxygen with apnea sleep monitors. Her primary symptom was headaches which, according to the girl's father, caused her to rub her head often as if in pain. Seven months prior to the chiropractic visit, the girl had been diagnosed with autism with the associated problems of this condition. Two months before the chiropractic care, the girl had also suffered a seizure.
A chiropractic examination was performed that revealed severe tenderness over the spine in the girl's upper back and entire neck region.  Reflexes were normal, but thermal studies confirmed autonomic nerve system disturbances in her upper mid-back and neck. As a result, a diagnosis of subluxations in the neck and upper back was made. Correction of the subluxations was subsequently initiated using specific adjusting procedures.
The authors report that ten days after the young girl's first adjustment, there was a notable decrease in head pain. It was noted that her posture had also improved. Her mother reported that her bowel movements had become much more regular, her daughter's behavior was much more "mellow," and that she had even been eating slightly better.
Twenty-four days after the onset of chiropractic care the girl's parents reported that her results were "incredible," noting that she made eye contact much more frequently and for prolonged periods of time. They also stated that instead of vomiting several times a day due to her acid reflux, she had only vomited a couple times throughout the week.
In a long term follow up at two hundred forty days after her first adjustment, the authors reported that most of her original symptoms were abated, and she had significantly more verbal communication ability.
In their discussion of the case, the authors quoted the girl's mother who stated that her daughter was, "...off all of her medications, she’s making improvements with her occupational therapists, speech therapists, even her pre-school teachers are noticing a big difference. I'm getting my little girl back – look, she’s making eye contact with me, and even starting to say a few words! She'll use her hands to do the motions to the Itsy Bitsy Spider song!"

Why Are Super Foods So Super?

Chiropractic Care and the Benefits of Nutrition
As with regular, vigorous exercise, consistent habits of good nutrition are substantially supported by regular chiropractic care. Good nutrition provides the necessary raw materials for a healthy physiology. But in order to properly utilize these nutritional building blocks, the physiological processes themselves must be functioning effectively. This is where regular chiropractic care comes in.
In order to put your dietary greens, berries, nuts, citrus fruits, root vegetables, grains, and proteins to good use, a complex array of networks needs to be working in harmony. Organs, tissues, and cells of your digestive, circulatory, and hormonal systems all need to exchange information smoothly and effectively. Your nervous system is the master system coordinating all this activity, and regular chiropractic care helps ensure that your nervous system is functioning at its best. Thus, regular chiropractic care helps you get the most out of your good nutritional choices and helps ensure the overall health and well-being of you and your family.
In recent years, media pundits around the world have proclaimed the extraordinary value of so-called super foods. Blueberries, broccoli, and especially kale have been described as possessing remarkable, almost magical, properties. What is it about these foods that makes them so good for you?
From a basic perspective, adding fresh fruits and vegetables of all types to your daily diet is a very smart way to help improve your current levels of health and well-being. Fresh fruits and vegetables are so important that many national agencies and organizations have promoted the "five to stay alive" rule - these groups recommend eating at least five portions of fruits and vegetables each day.1
Fresh fruits and vegetables provide numerous health benefits, many of which are based upon the actions of biochemicals known as phytonutrients. Certain of these formerly mysterious compounds stimulate enzyme activity and others have actions similar to those of hormones. Many phytonutrients are powerful antioxidants that circulate throughout the body, scooping up and neutralizing free radicals. Free radicals are a normal byproduct of cellular metabolism, but too many of them will cause a lot of problems. Excess free radicals have, for example, been linked to development of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer.2,3 Blueberries, broccoli, and kale are categorized as "super foods" owing to the abundance of phytonutrients they contain and make available to those who consume them.
The takeaway is not to load up on kale, broccoli, and blueberries in an attempt to make up for years of less-than-optimal dietary choices. Rather, the goal is to begin, today, to implement a healthful, balanced food plan. Diets lacking fresh fruits and vegetables in general, and lacking super foods in particular, will not provide you and your family with the resources needed to enjoy productive, energy-filled days. Resolving to follow the "five-to-stay-alive" plan will add literally missing ingredients to your daily health regime. As you upgrade your nutrition, you're automatically upgrading the functioning of all your body's systems.
With sufficient dietary phytonutrients, you can help prevent chronic disease, strengthen the immune system, combat the effects of obesity, and obtain numerous anti-aging benefits.
The vast array of advantages that will likely ensue include more restful sleep; enhanced skin tone and muscle tone; increased reserves of energy throughout the day; and improved ability to focus and complete tasks successfully. Improved peace of mind will naturally occur as a consequence of these benefits, and an untapped reservoir of creativity may be revealed. Super foods truly provide super benefits.
