Tips for Keeping Your Resolutions

Tips for Keeping Your Resolutions

by Jon Wise Dc on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 12:41pm
Don't Over Do It
Set goals that are challenging yet attainable. Take some time to consider what is most important to you and choose a resolution that moves you in the right direction, yet is not a drastic, overwhelming change.

Tell Everyone
Spread the word! Support from friends, family and co-workers can make a huge difference as you strive to reach your goals. Making them aware of your goals is a great way to ask for that extra bit of support that can get you through even the toughest challenges.

Treat Yourself Along the Way
Be sure to be good to yourself and celebrate small achievements on the way to the big one. Reward yourself as a way to encourage more of the same successful behavior.

Total Lunar Eclipse During The Winter Solstice

Tonight's Adventure! Total Lunar Eclipse During The Winter Solstice

By Danelle Frisbie ©2010
Lunar eclipse Feb 21, 2008 by Gregg L. Ruppel

One of the advantages of having a night owl for a toddler is that we've been able to experience many of the midnight wonders the sky has to offer. I long ago gave up my attempts to get him into a 'normal' schedule (much to the dismay of my mother), and decided instead to just go with my son's natural sleep rhythms - snoozing along side him when he does. The benefits of this arrangement have allowed us to partake in night time adventures that I was never expecting to have before my mothering journey began. We've trekked down to the beach and joined local astronomers in peering through telescopes to check out fantastic visions on more than one occasion. At two-years-old, my son has examined the blue beauty of Neptune, counted its four moons, gone swinging and singing under remarkable meteor showers, gazed upon blue-green Uranus, and indulged in the triple conjunction of Venus, Mars and Saturn. Granted, he understands little more than the fact that these events are all "Woooow!" worthy, and he has no idea that many of the sights we've seen may not occur again in his lifetime, but the experiences are fun nonetheless.

Tonight will be another wonder to indulge in, and if you have tots who play long into the night at your house, it may be something you want to step outside and see as well. It will be the first time since 1963 that we experience a total eclipse of the moon on the winter solstice. The next time this happens will be on December 21, 2094, so for many of us, this truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Lunar eclipse will be visible to all of North America

The eclipse will begin tonight (Tuesday morning, Dec 21) at 1:33am EST -- or 10:33pm this evening for those on the Pacific coast. At 1:33am, the Earth's shadow will appear as a dark red 'bite' at the edge of the lunar disk. It will slowly expand over the next hour to 'swallow' the entire moon at 2:41am EST. For 72 minutes, the eerie amber light will dance across the snow of North America (or sand, if you're on the beach like us). Visions of rusty, ruddy shadows will play out before us. This totality will remain until 3:53am.

According to The Weather Channel (TWC), if you are only going out for one look, you may want to do so at 3:17am EST when the moon will be in the deepest shadow of Earth and displaying the boldest shades of coppery red.

Why red?

TWC recently answered this question:
A quick trip to the Moon provides the answer: Imagine yourself standing on a dusty lunar plain looking up at the sky. Overhead hangs Earth, nightside down, completely hiding the sun behind it. The eclipse is underway. You might expect Earth seen in this way to be utterly dark, but it's not. The rim of the planet is on fire! As you scan your eye around Earth's circumference, you're seeing every sunrise and every sunset in the world, all of them, all at once. This incredible light beams into the heart of Earth's shadow, filling it with a coppery glow and transforming the Moon into a great red orb.
How magnificent!

What makes this particular lunar eclipse so rare (the last lunar eclipse was Feb 21, 2008 and there have been three total in the past decade) is that it falls on the same date as the northern winter solstice. The winter solstice holds an extra bit of significance for our family because my partner and I were joined together in a handfasting ceremony on the eve of the winter solstice (my grandfather's birthday) years ago. At the time it was actually the Navy governing our wedding agenda (or lack thereof) as it was the only time deployments matched up with dates family could attend... But now I rather enjoy the significance of it all.

U.S. Naval Observatory's "walking history book," Geoff Chester, has examined eclipse and solstice records from the past 2,000 years, including our handfasting date, and says, "Since Year One, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is December 21, 1638."

So for a truly rare, red event, toss on the sn

Looking to Beat the Flu and Cold Bugs?

Here are just a few suggestions to go with the many post I have done in the past!
In your health,
Dr. Jon Wise

Vitamin C
A study of 715 people showed that flu symptoms were decreased by 85 percent when people took 6 grams of vitamin C as a one-time loading dose, then continuing with 1 gram three times a day, compared with people taking only the 3 grams daily. The message here is to take a lot of vitamin C the first day you feel symptoms or the first day people around you are getting sick, and then take 3 grams daily after that. Keep in mind that vitamin C can loosen stools, so be careful if you are predisposed to this.
An additional study showed that vitamin C is 10 times more effective in its antiviral properties when taken with iron. Ten to 20 mg of iron can be taken on a daily basis, and is also a good mineral to balance the stool-loosening effects of vitamin C.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D has exploded in research and popularity the past few years. Most of us are familiar with its bone-building properties, however new research suggests it improves the immune system as well. Have your doctor test your vitamin D levels before supplementing. Research suggests 2,000 IU daily is safe for most adults and children. Higher doses are safe and effective, but must be monitored by your doctor.

Elderberry
Elderberry (Sambucus) was researched in a group of 60 people and found to alleviate symptoms four days earlier compared with controls. Elderberry helps boosts the immune system and is great-tasting for kids. Start taking as soon as symptoms manifest.

Gingseng
Panax quinquefolium (ginseng) was studied in a large group of 323 patients as a preventive natural medicine. The group that took panax experienced 30 percent less colds compared with the placebo group (people who didn't take ginseng), and average number of sick days were 11 compared with 16 in the non-treatment group.

Last, but not least, the well-known oscillococcinum is a homeopathic flu treatment that is created new every year. Tough to pronounce, but effective; a Cochrane review of all oscillococcinum studies showed that it reduces the length of illness compared with placebo.

There's a high likelihood that the flu and/or colds will affect your family every year. In most cases it's nothing more than an inconvenience, in some cases it can be deadly serious. Prevention and immune boosting is essential for everyone to ensure that when they do get sick, it is only a short and mild inconvenience. Trust in the power of natural medicine. Talk to your doctor for more information about these and other natural ways to boost your immune system and ward off colds and the flu.

The Flu Vaccine: A Few Words of Caution
Flu vaccines are available on an annual basis, but concern should be taken for the following reasons:
  • Flu vaccines contain thimerisol, a neurotoxic mercury preservative.
  • Children with severe egg allergy should not get the vaccine.
  • Children with Guillain-Barre syndrome should not get the vaccine.
  • Young infants with low immune systems should not get the vaccine.
  • Children with acute illness should not get the vaccine.
Five pounds, 10 pounds, 15 pounds or even more: How much weight do you gain in an average holiday season? This year, buck the trend with some simple planning. Take these six suggestions to heart and enjoy the holiday season the healthy way.

1. Family Fitness
What better way to counterbalance the extra calories you're sure to consume this holiday season than with some calorie-burning, cardio-benefiting exercise that involves the entire family? Reminiscing with relatives is great, but why not bond with them and stay in shape at the same time with a game of touch football, a snowball fight or even a long walk around the neighborhood?
Healthy Holidays calendar
2. Portion Control
We're not saying you can't sample the vast array of cakes, pies and other holiday treats heaped on the table; we're just saying don't overdo it. Portion control is important all year, but it's vital when faced with a daunting supply of high-carb and even higher-sugar foods. So indulge a little and feel good that you've indulged; but don't overeat and end up spending the holidays immobile.

3. Holiday Helper
Whether you're at home or away for the holidays, taking an active role in holiday preparation can be better than a trip to the gym; getting the house in order, preparing the food and cleaning up (hopefully with some help) afterward will burn plenty of calories. And remember, you can prepare your own entree or side dish and ensure you have at least one healthy item to eat.

4. Bring It Along
You're a thousand miles from home at your parents' house, nowhere from your favorite gym or your favorite healthy foods. Fortunately, you remembered to pack a few essentials, like whole-grain energy bars, protein powder and a pair of exercise bands. Mix in a little exercise and nutritious food with the "bad" stuff and you'll feel better about life away from your healthy comfort zone.

5. Safety in Numbers
Healthy Holidays workout Keep in mind that when faced with the holiday season, you don't have to face it alone. Whether it's splitting up the holiday shopping with your spouse, recruiting a few family members to help cook a (semi) healthy holiday meal, or making a pact with your best friend to stick with your exercise program during the hustle and bustle, do it together and you'll be more likely to get it done.

6. Enjoy Yourself
This is the holiday season; don't turn it into an agonizing, moment-by-moment game of "Should I eat this?" and "When can I get away to the gym?" Remember, good health is about minimizing stress as much as it's about eating right and staying physically active. So enjoy the time away from work and with loved ones, even if it comes with a (little) more food and a (little) less exercise. You deserve it.

Reinforced Baseball Cap

One of my patients is the designer of this great invention. It will help prevent or minimize head injuries as a result of an uncontrollable baseball. You can even see a small clip of me taking the time to educate a little bit about the most common fracture point on the human skull.

11 ways to de-stress your body and mind

Stress occurs in the body and in the mind. Some stresses are due to something we are (or aren’t) doing to our body and as such have an external solution. Other forms of stress are just in the mind and can be successfully treated using mental techniques. Here are 11 of the best ways to de-stress your distressed body and mind.

1. Get checked out by your chiropractor.
Chiropractic care works by improving the neurological functioning of your body. When your bodies nervous system functions better, it can adapt and react to the stress placed on your body.

2. Listen to classical music
Okay, it doesn’t have to be classical if you really don’t like it but I have found that in some stressful situations (exams, work deadlines, etc.) putting some classical music in my iPod really helps me to cool down. Heck! Even great rock music works well for me.

Many scientific studies have shown that the brain exhibts different behaviour when listening to classical music and one of those behaviours is that it causes the release of chemicals that make you feel better. These are the same ones that get released when you exercise.

Science has also shown that classical music can act as a cause to slow down your breathing and heart rate which can be very useful in certain situations.

3. Exercise more
It would seem pretty obvious to those of you who read this site regularly that exercise would be good for stress! But, many people will read this article after finding it on Google and for you I should point out that exercise is one of the best ways to de-stress your body and mind.

It works on a few levels: Firstly, you feel good when you exercise because at a chemical level your body likes to exercise. Endorphins get released after a weight training session or a jog and this leaves you feeling good. Secondly, we feel good mentally after exercise. My patients often tell me that after a gut-wrenching workout they are left feeling like that have achieved something and go home with renewed passion for their diet and healthy lifestyle. This is important.

4. Get rid of bad friends
There is a great buddhist master called Shantideva who said “Bad friends are like rotting fish and you are like a rose. Mix the rose with the fish and soon it will stink too!”

I find this quote to be very true and often notice the pain and anguish that people suffer because of so called “friends”. In my own life, for example, I see that many of my friends are quick to take from me but very slow to give anything back. I often find that stories I tell friends in confidence get told to other people and make their way back to me. This type of thing can be stressful.

It can go further too. If you find that friends are putting you in situation of pressure - parties, drinking, drugs… whatever, then maybe you need to get rid of them and find some new ones. Loyalty is important but if the people you are being loyal too aren’t really deserved of it then maybe you should re-think how much time you spend with them.

5. Cut out fatty foods
Fatty foods often you feeling heavy and depressed. They slow down your digestive system and make everything inside you a little bit off. I often find that if I cheat and get a fast food meal for lunch I am stressed soon after because I feel tired and sorry for myself and I start to think “how the heck am I going to get all my work done when I am so darn tired?”.

Like a good car you want to feed yourself quality fuel. This keeps your body and your mind running well. Stick to natural foods like fruits and vegetables as much as you can. You will feel better for it.

6. Stop putting it off
When I put things off I get stressed. Whether it is study, work, chores, doctors visits or something else it always seems bigger and scarier when I putt it off. If we sort out our problems early we can often avoid the mental activities that go along with that event.

For example, I hate writing reports. I put it off until the last min. But by the time I decide to type up the report, I realize it has only taken me a few minutesto do so.

Another stressful event that people put off for a long time is their work situation. Many people are unhappy in their work and this leads to a very stressful state of mind. One needs to find a solution to this work problem which could be quitting, being re-assigned or learning to cope with it. Either way, a stressful job is not something that we should put up with and avoid fixing for too long.

Resolve to get stressful events out of the way as soon as you can.

7. Its all in your mind!
One of the best techniques I learned in India from the buddhist monks and yogis is that you need to realise that all the stress you experience is in YOUR own mind. It is not outside you. It is not coming from someone else. It is in you. And as such you can resolve it. You can choose to let it take over your life or you can recognise that it is just a few thoughts running around and let them go.

This point is especially important and can be used in conjunction with all the other points. The first thing you need to do when you feel stressed is look at your mind and say “oh yeah, just some stressed thoughts” and move on. Nothing serious there.

Meditation is a great way to become expert at watching your thoughts. This allows you to catch any stressful thoughts before they get out of control and observe them for what they are - just thoughts. Sit down for 10 minutes in the morning and just watch your thoughts come and go. You will find that after only a few days of doing this your stressful thoughts will have less of an impact on you.

8. Spa, stretch and massage often
People often think of spas and massages as luxury treats but if you are a member of a gym or most chiropractic office's offer massage, you can get them pretty cheap. It is a great way to relax your mind and allow your body to have some much needed rest time. It can also aid in the healing of muscles and stressed joints. Likewise, stretching during the day can release tension in your muscles.

Reward a week of hard exercise or work with a massage or a spa. You don’t have to feel guilty about having 20 minutes away from whatever is so important in your life. You deserve it!

9. Sleep better
Sleep has got to be one of the number one reasons that people get stressed. Not enough sleep, not good enough sleep, not enough regular good sleep. The list goes on.

Sleep is very important to humans. It is the time when the body and the mind processes the events of the day and much healing takes place when you are deep asleep. For this reason it is important to make sure your sleep is not only long enough but good enough.

Here are some points to remember about sleep:

- 8 hours IS NOT a rule!
It really annoys me when people say you HAVE to have 8 hours of sleep. You don’t. Everyone is different. Some people can function fine off of 6 while others need 9. It has even been suggested that setting a fixed number like 8 is an obstacle to good sleep because if you don’t get it you tell yourself you haven’t slept long enough when in actual fact you might be fine!

- Get a good pillow and bed
What you sleep on is very important. If you wake up with a headache or sore back you might need to swap your sleeping equipment!

- Get earplugs
If you have a snoring husband then some earplugs might be just what you need. They take some getting used to but once you have mastered them you will sleep better than ever.

- Not too hot
Don’t sleep with too many layers on. If you are too hot when you sleep you are likely to be agitated and not sleep as well as you could.

- NO coffee, wine or chocolate
This is the most important thing to remember. Doctors say that there are three things that upset your gut and cause you to have bad sleep - coffee, wine and chocolate. These things should not be eaten within two hours of sleep if you want to sleep well.

10. Get some lovin’ (Sex works great!)
I bet you all read this and thought: “Alright - now that’s some de-stressing!”

When I say get some lovin’ I mean on many different levels. Being around a loved one is a great way to de-stress. You can be yourself, say what you want and not feel judged or on show. It is very relaxing. You can also do them same for them and this helps to de-stress too as being nice to people is an excellent way to feel better about yourself.

Lovin’ also refers to the stuff I know you are all wanting me to talk about. Sex that isn’t angry or aggressive but is instead peaceful and loving has been shown to reduce stress levels and boost some immune function. While I am not recommending everyone go out and get nasty if you have a loved one you feel open with and you need to de-stress then maybe a bit of a kiss and a cuddle would help.

11. Look at the bigger picture
When you feel trapped inside your own little situation it is very helpful to take a step back and change your perspective. One can very easily get caught up in the day-to-day activities we get so caught up in and forget that there is other stuff going on outside it.

When you look at a stressful situation from a different perspective you often see that it isn’t as bad as you first thought. You might be able to find a positive in an otherwise negative situation or you might simply find that you are stronger than you first thought. Either way, taking a step back to look at your own bigger picture and the bigger picture beyond that is a great way to calm down and de-stress.

Conclusion
Stress can really get a handle on you if you let it. The key is to realize that you are in control of your own mind and as such you can have a huge impact on how stressed you become. Starting out small with some of these tips is a great place to begin but you should always be aware of yourself as each person has different ways of de-stressing. Try to find some personal methods as they will be much more powerful.

Be sure to take a proactive approach about your health and work on de-stressing your body before it takes a negative toll on your body. There are many Chiropractors, massage therapist, gyms, yoga studios, etc... that are accepting new clients. Be sure to call some places and make your appointments today! Incorporating yoga and massage with your chiropractic wellness care is a big must! They are just a few keys of my concept of health: EAT WISE - MOVE WISE - THINK WISE

If there is ever anything I can do to help you achieve a state of relaxation, feel free to ask.
