My Neck Is KILLING Me!!! By Kevin Donka, D.C.

My Neck Is KILLING Me!!! By Kevin Donka, D.C.
by Kevin Donka on Friday, October 29, 2010 at 10:02am

“Hey Robert, It’s Great to see you today!” I said as he came into our adjusting room. “Hi Doc, I know I was just here a few days ago, but I had to come in again because my neck is killing me,” He replied. “I’m really glad you’re feeling so well then,” I answered. Robert looked at me strangely and then repeated himself, “No…I said my neck is KILLING me!” “I know,” I continued, “And I’m glad you are able to FEEL well enough to get the warning signal you are getting from your body. If you weren’t able to FEEL it, you wouldn’t be able to act upon that warning and take steps to begin moving in the direction of health, wellness and wholeness again.” “Oh, I see what you’re saying,” Robert said, “The pain is a signal that I need to get something fixed…right.” “That’s right Robert, and once you are adjusted today, you can begin fixing that problem yourself!” He gave me that confused look again and said, “I’m sure you’ll explain that to me too Doc.” “Of course I will,” I said, “But let’s get you adjusted first so you’re clear enough to make some new choices once I do.”

There are several important ideas in the dialogue above we need to look at. First of all, there is an Innate Wisdom inside your body that runs, regulates, heals and grows your body, and your neural system allows you to receive messages from this Intelligence to help keep you moving in the right direction with your health and life. Many people don’t FEEL well enough (i.e., they aren’t able to feel things at an effective level) to make different choices. Or even if they are, they usually just cover them up with medications or other things, or they may even just ignore these signals.

Next, Robert assumed that once he was adjusted, the problem would be solved. But you see, while the chiropractic adjustment he would get from me that day would help his Innate Intelligence heal his body from the cause of his pain, he needed to get to the CAUSE of the cause. That is, he needed to address what caused the subluxation process in the first place. Had there been some kind of injury? Had he been focusing too much in his life on what was wrong or missing instead of what was great and what he wanted to move toward? Was there some aspect of the health-allowing lifestyle he was neglecting? I could restore the normal flow of Life energy that was altered by the subluxation process, but it was up to HIM to ask himself why it occurred in the first place, and take whatever steps were necessary to begin moving toward health, wellness and wholeness again.

Last, nothing in life (including our health) ever stays the same; everything is always in the process of changing. And ultimately, everyone is always moving either toward growth or toward death. So when Robert said his neck was “killing” him, he wasn’t that far off of the truth. Three things are necessary to keep growing toward wholeness, as mentioned above. These are, a focus on moving TOWARD what you want (as opposed to trying to “escape” what you don’t want), a healthy lifestyle that supplies every cell of your body with what it needs to function properly, heal and grow, and a clear neurological CONNECTION (thus, the need for chiropractic care). So the neural interference caused by the subluxation process really does cause you to slowly die. But Robert was only partially right when he said his neck was killing him. He had made the choices that had caused the subluxation process in the first place. So, he had actually been “killing” himself.

What choices will YOU make today, and which direction will YOU move?

Chiropractic research on High Blood Pressure. Are we treating symptoms or trying to fix the cause.

This is a great story that keeps reminding me of what our goals are as chiropractors and what they should be. We do not treat symptoms... We address the problem with how the nervous system regulates your body. If one is having neurological dysfunction, then you body has a hard time functioning at 100%. The main role of a chiropractor is to decrease the stress placed on your spine and nervous system to allow your body to express itself and function at an optimal level!

Chiropractic Does NOT Help Lower Blood Pressure! By Kevin Donka, D.C.

by Kevin Donka on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 8:52am
There have been several studies over the years (two recently, including one at the University of Chicago Medical School) that talk about the chiropractic adjustment’s ability to lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients. You might think that as a chiropractor these kinds of studies make me very happy. While I am happy that chiropractic is getting some positive press, I am actually quite disturbed by these kinds of studies that show chiropractic to be a treatment (alternative or otherwise) for any kind of dis-ease. The problem I have with these studies is that there is an underlying assumption that the particular symptom being focused upon (i.e., high blood pressure) is something gone WRONG in that person. You may be thinking, “But high blood pressure IS something gone wrong!” This is where we need to talk about the words NORMAL and AVERAGE.

Is it possible that the reason someone has a blood pressure outside the AVERAGE is that the Innate Intelligence of the body is trying to accomplish something by raising or lowering it? What if, as a person gets older and is less active, his leg muscles lose some of their strength and ability to contract normally, making it harder for his heart to pump blood against gravity and fully oxygenate his brain? Might the Innate Intelligence of his body RAISE his blood pressure above AVERAGE to ensure NORMAL oxygenation of his brain? Might taking medicines to artificially LOWER his blood pressure actually decrease the amount of oxygen to his brain and cause mental problems such as Alzheimer’s disease or something similar? On a related note, might his Innate Intelligence lay down a greater than AVERAGE amount of cholesterol in his arteries in order to more easily and efficiently raise his blood pressure in response to his increased need for oxygen? Decreased blood flow to any specific area of your body may cause an overall increase in your blood pressure in the same way.

The truth is that there are really only three reasons why you might have a blood pressure that is outside of the AVERAGE range.

1) Your focus and/or lifestyle choices keep your body and mind in a survival state that REQUIRES a higher than AVERAGE blood pressure to survive the day. This is a CORRECT response.
2) Your Innate Intelligence is CORRECTLY attempting to compensate for a specific challenge somewhere in your body and may need to raise or lower it (this may also be due to a lifestyle choice).
3) Your Innate Intelligence is unable to fully comprehend and/or respond to what your body needs due to a decreased brain-body connection (i.e., subluxation) and has therefore INCORRECTLY altered your blood pressure.

In the cases where people’s blood pressures decrease after their adjustments, they obviously just needed a clearer neurological connection so that their Innate Intelligence could more accurately regulate their blood pressure. The adjustments gave them that clearer connection. An interesting finding in many of these studies was that several subjects actually had an increase in their blood pressure occur after chiropractic care. This baffled the researchers, but if we understand again that a CLEAR NEUROLOGICAL CONNECTION is required in order for Innate Intelligence to correctly raise your blood pressure if necessary (see #1 and #2 above), then it is very easy to see that once these people were reconnected by an adjustment, the CORRECT response in their blood pressure occurred automatically!

Basically what it all comes down to is this. You have an amazing Inborn Wisdom that knows exactly what YOUR blood pressure needs to be in every moment. This is your NORMAL blood pressure whether it is the AVERAGE for the population or not. But in order for you to maintain YOUR normal blood pressure, you MUST have a healthy lifestyle, a positive mental focus and above all, a CLEAR NEUROLOGICAL CONNECTION! Seeing your chiropractor regularly allows you to KNOW you are neurologically clear and TRUST that your Innate Intelligence is always doing the right thing in order to keep YOU functioning, adapting, healing and growing perfectly. Then you can relax and celebrate all that you are and all that you can yet be!

Is Splenda Making You Sick?

Sucralose (Splenda) is a Chlorocarbon.
It is in the same family of chemicals as DDT and PCBs.
Don't worry, it’s not DDT, it’s “DDT-Lite!”

Splenda Reaction Symptoms

* Flushing or redness of the skin
* Burning feeling of the skin
* Rash
* Itching
* A panicky or shaky feeling
* Swelling
* Blisters on the skin
* Welts
* Nausea
* Stomach cramps
* Dry heaves
* Becoming withdrawn
* Loss of interest in usual activities
* Feeling forgetful
* Moodiness
* Dulled senses
* Unexplained crying
* Acne or acne-like rash
* Anxiety
* Panic attacks
* Feelings of food poisoning
* Headache
* Seeing spots
* Mental or emotional breakdown
* Altered emotional state, i.e. feeling irate, impatient, hypersensitive
* Pain (body, chest)
* Bloated abdomen
* Diarrhea
* Trouble concentrating/staying in focus
* Feeling depressed
* Vomiting
* Seizures
* Shaking
* Feeling faint

Splenda, which is the brand name for the non-nutritive sweetener sucralose, is added to hundreds of foods and beverages sold in the United States and abroad. At this time there have been no long-term studies done to show how this manmade substance reacts in the human body. Despite this lack of research, Splenda is showing up in many products, even those that claim to be "healthy," and Americans are buying them thinking they are somehow better than those with sugar. In all actuality, if you eat Splenda you are acting as a guinea pig in a science experiment since no one knows what the long-term effects of Splenda will be.

Maybe you are thinking, but it is FDA-approved so it must be safe. Well, I could fill many pages listing all of the "approved" substances that have turned out to be unfit for human use, but here are just a few:

* Aspartame
* PEDIARIX combination vaccine for children
* Food irradiation
* FluMist nasal flu vaccine

If you would like to know more about why Splenda is essentially chlorinated table sugar, you should read The Potential Dangers of Sucralose. Some chlorinated molecules serve as the basis for pesticides such as DDT and accumulate in body fat and tissues. Although is commonly thought that surcralose passes through the body unabsorbed, FDA research says otherwise. According to FDA tests, 11 percent to 27 percent of sucralose is absorbed by humans, and tests by the Japanese Food Sanitation Council show that up to 40 percent may actually be absorbed.

In fact, here is what it says on the Splenda Web site:

"Studies have shown that about 15% of ingested sucralose is passively absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The small amount of sucralose that is absorbed is distributed to essentially all tissues."

Along with the lack of long-term studies, sucralose has been the subject of fewer scientific studies than any other non-nutritive sweetener. Perhaps they are afraid of what they may discover. Already Splenda has surpassed Equal in dollar-market share, and any negative findings would surely cut into these massive earnings.

The Splenda site also states that Splenda causes "no known side effects." Well below I’ve included a list of reactions compiled from those that readers have experienced. Although many of these symptoms could indeed have other contributing causes, most people stated that the symptoms began around the same time they started using Splenda, and then subsequently disappeared when Splenda was removed from their diet. You can read our Splenda testimonials to get their entire stories, and if you find yourself experiencing any of the symptoms below I urge you to remove Splenda from your diet if you have not done so already.

10 Reasons Why Flu Shots Are More Dangerous Than a Flu!

The verdict is out on flu shots. Many medical experts now agree it is more important to protect yourself and your family from the flu vaccine than the flu itself. Let’s take a look at the reasons behind this verdict:

1.) There is a total lack of real evidence that young children even benefit from flu shots. A systematic review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo. Also the shots are only able to protect against certain strains of the virus, which means that if you come into contact with a different strain of virus you will still get the flu.

2.) Medical journals have published thousands of articles revealing that injecting vaccines can actually lead to serious health problems including harmful immunological responses and a host of other infections. This further increases the body’s susceptibility to the diseases that the vaccine was supposed to protect against.

3.) Ever noticed how vaccinated children within days or few weeks develop runny noses, pneumonia, ear infections and bronchiolitis? The reason is the flu virus introduced in their bodies which creates these symptoms. It also indicates immuno-suppression i.e. lowering of the immunity. The flu vaccines actually do not immunize but sensitize the body against the virus.

4.) Its a known fact that Flu vaccines contain strains of the flu virus along with other ingredients. Now think about the impact such a vaccine can have over someone with a suppressed immune system? If you have a disease that is already lowering your body’s ability to fight a virus, taking the flu shot will put your body in danger of getting the full effects of the flu and make you more susceptible to pneumonia and other contagious diseases.

5.) The Flu vaccines contain mercury, a heavy metal known to be hazardous for human health. The amount of mercury contained in a multi-dose flu shot is much higher than the maximum allowable daily exposure limit. Mercury toxicity can cause memory loss, depression, ADD, oral health problems, digestive imbalances, respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases and many more such serious health ailments.

And what about the elderly? Can the flu vaccine help them?

6.) There is mounting evidence that flu shots can cause Alzheimer’s disease. One report shows that people who received the flu vaccine each year for 3 to 5 years had a 10-fold greater chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease than people who did not have any flu shots. Also with age the immune system weakens, thus lowering your ability to fight off infections. Introducing the flu virus in the bodies of elderly could have dangerous consequences.

Can we trust the authorities who are promoting the wide-spread use of flu vaccines?

7.) The Center for Disease Control appoints a 15-member Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). This committee is responsible for deciding who should be vaccinated each year. Almost all the ACIP have a financial interest in immunizations. It’s all about the money and may have very little to do with your health and well being. The very people pushing these vaccines stand to make billions of dollars. This itself creates a doubt on how effective these flu vaccines really are?

8.) Research shows that over-use of the flu-vaccine and drugs like Tamiflu and Relenza can actually alter flu viruses and cause them to mutate into a more deadly strain. Couple this with drug resistant strains and you have virtually no benefits with much risk.

9.) There is enough evidence that shows that the ingredients present in the flu vaccinations can actually cause serious neurological disorders. In the 1976 swine flu outbreak, many who got the flu shots developed permanent nerve damage. Flu vaccines can contain many harmful materials including detergent, mercury, formaldehyde, and strains of live flu virus. Is this what you want to put in YOUR body?

10.) Trying to guess what strain to vaccinate against each season has proved to be no more effective than a guessing game. This has been very true in recent years with the H1N1 strain. Moreover getting multi-shots will only prove more dangerous as different strains of viruses and harmful ingredients are introduced into your body.

Flu shots are indeed more dangerous than you could think, and it is best to rely on natural ways to protect against the flu rather than getting yourself vaccinated.

Isn’t it interesting that the main stream public health officials never promote the various proven ways to avoid the flu other than through vaccination? How about spending some of the billions of advertising dollars teaching us natural ways to boost our immune systems and avoid the flu without harmful and sometimes deadly vaccinations.

The 42 Pound Head

The 42 Pound Head

Written by Erik Dalton, Ph.D.

 “For every inch of Forward Head Posture, it can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds.” -Kapandji, Physiology of Joints, Vol. 3
It's not uncommon to have clients walk into your office sporting a 12 pound head that's migrated three inches forward of their shoulders. You know prior to palpation that their cervical extensors (semispinalis, splenii, longissimus and upper traps) are in a losing battle attempting to isometrically restrain 42 pounds against the unrelenting force of gravity (Figure 1).
Rene Cailliet M.D., former director of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Southern California wrote:

Head in forward posture can add up to thirty pounds of abnormal leverage on the cervical spine. This can pull the entire spine out of alignment.
Forward head posture (FHP) may result in the loss of 30% of vital lung capacity. These breath-related effects are primarily due to the loss of the cervical lordosis which blocks the action of the hyoid muscles, especially the inferior hyoid responsible for helping lift the first rib during inhalation.
Proper rib lifting action by the hyoids and anterior scalenes is essential for complete aeration of the lungs (Fig 2 Hyoids /ant scalenes).
The entire gastrointestinal system (particularly the large intestine) may become agitated from FHP resulting in sluggish bowel peristaltic function and evacuation.
Cailliet also states: "Most attempts to correct posture are directed toward the spine, shoulders and pelvis. All are important, but, head position takes precedence over all others. The body follows the head. Therefore, the entire body is best aligned by first restoring proper functional alignment to the head". (13) 1

The effects of poor posture go far beyond just looking awkward.
In fact, the January, 2004 issue of the American Journal of Pain Management reported on the relationship of poor posture and chronic pain conditions including low back pain, neck related headaches, and stress-related illnesses. "The extra pressure imposed on the neck from poor posture flattens the normal cervical curve resulting in abnormal strain on muscles, ligaments, fascia and bones."2
Research presented at the 31st Annual International Conference of the IEEE EMBS Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, (2009) stated; "Over time poor posture results in pain, muscle aches, tension and headache and can lead to long term complications such as osteoarthritis. Forward head carriage may promote accelerated aging of intervertebral joints resulting in degenerative joint disease."3 (Fig.3).
It appears posture impacts and modulates all bodily functions from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse and lung capacity are among the many conditions influenced by faulty posture.

90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine” Dr. Roger Sperry, (Nobel Prize Recipient for Brain Research)

Additionally, Dr Roger Sperry demonstrated that 90% of the brain's energy output is used in relating the physical body to gravity. Only 10% has to do with thinking, metabolism, and healing.4 Consequently, a FHP will cause the brain to rob energy from thinking, metabolism, and immune function to deal with abnormal gravity/posture relationships and processing. The March 2000 Mayo Clinic Health Letter expounded on Sperry's findings by reporting that prolonged FHP also leads to "myospasm, disc herniations, arthritis and pinched nerves." Degenerative neck pain goes hand-in-hand with balance problems especially in the elderly. Sensitive cervical spine mechanoreceptors govern the body's ability to balance and must be perfectly coordinated with the inner ear's vestibular balance system to stabilize equilibrium in both static posture and gait. Keeping the eyes looking forward is a basic life-preserving reflex, and as such, dominates nearly all other postural considerations. Proprioceptive signals from the first 4 cervical vertebrae are a major source of stimuli for regulating the body's pain-controlling chemicals (endorphins). FHP dramatically reduces endorphin production by limiting the cervical spine's range of motion. Inadequate endorphin production up-regulates the central nervous system causing non painful sensations to be experienced as pain. Figure 4 shows a couple of good mobilization techniques to restore joint-play to upper cervical fixated facets.
Dr. Alf Breig, a Swedish neurosurgeon and Nobel Prize recipient coined the termed 'adverse neural tension' to describe the mechanism by which loss of normal cervical lordotic curve creates dysfunction and disease.5
Through cadaver studies, Dr. Breig demonstrated that neck flexion could stretch the spinal cord 5-7 cm causing tensioning of the meninges (covering of the brain and spinal cord) and elicit measurable pressure on brain-stem nuclei (nerve control centers) which control all basic life functions. The increased compression led to dysregulation of basic metabolic control functions. Recall that the spinal cord is actually only "tethered" to the bony skeleton in the upper cervical and lowest sacral areas (top and bottom ends of the spine). In between these polar attachments, the spinal cord is relatively free to move up and down. Free-floating mobility of the cord is essential in allowing bending and twisting of our bodies. Anything that reduces that freedom, i.e., exaggerated or flattened spinal curves, dural impingement, etc. increases cord and brain stem tension. Increased tensile stress on the cord and brain stem not only interferes with the control of basic body processes such as breathing and motor control but in cases of dural impingement, may encourage painful cervical radiculopathies.

Identifying Common Compensatory Patterns
Fortunately, the legendary biomedical researcher Vladimir Janda, MD has helped simplify assessment of commonly seen muscle imbalance patterns consistent with FHP. Janda's Upper Crossed Syndrome (Fig. 5) is characterized by overactivity or tightness in the upper trapezius, levator, suboccipitals. sternocleidomastoids and pectoralis major and reciprocal weakness of the deep neck flexors and lower scapular stabilizers. Trained therapists visually recognize this aberrant pattern through postural and gait analysis and kinesthetically through tissue palpation and muscle length testing. Unfortunately, as normal movement patterns are altered by persistent pain, joint fixations or muscle imbalances, new neuronal pathways are burned into the central nervous system and gradually memorized as normal (neuroplasticity). Any deviation of normal head and neck movement alters precise firing order patterns causing the prime mover to be slow to activate. Substitution patterns develop as synergistic stabilizing muscles are recruited to do the job of the prime mover. Some believe the first step in restoring proper muscle balance is to mobilize dysfunctional joints to help reprogram these garbled neuromuscular pathways. Once normal joint play is established and muscle splinting removed, structural integrative soft tissue work creates functional length/strength balance.

Correction of Upper Crossed neck posture is key to stopping and possibly reversing decay, degenerative changes and pain from headaches, rib dysfunction, TMJ, and Dowager's Humps ...but it takes time and a concerted effort to repair the damage caused by faulty neck posture.

The following traits are often seen in those presenting with Upper Crossed Syndrome:

• Suboccipital pain syndromes
• Mouth breathing (sleep apnea)
• Difficulty swallowing
• Teeth clenching
• Face & neck pain
• Migraine headaches
• Uncoordinated gait and loss of body balance

Summary
Often seen as a structurally subtle body segment, the neck is burdened with the challenging task of supporting and moving the human head. Because of tension, trauma and poor postural habits inherent in today’s workplace, it comes as no surprise that head-on-neck and neck-on-thorax disorders rank high among the most common pain generators driving people into bodywork practices. When spinal tissues are exposed to continued compression, they deform and go through a transformation that can become permanent. Correction of Upper Crossed neck posture is key to stopping and reversing degenerative joint disease and pain from headaches, rib dysfunction, TMJ, and Dowager's Humps. English philosopher Bertrand Russell once stated, "A physical system expresses its energy through function". Any loss of function sets off reactions within the body's open, dynamic system which manifests as structural abnormalities...and vice-versa. When treating functional problems such as loss of joint play, therapists must look beyond the symptoms and the artificial dividing of the body into systems and treat the whole.

Pulmonary Function and Neck Curve Improved with Chiropractic Care

Pulmonary Function and Neck Curve Improved with Chiropractic Care

A study published on October 12, 2009 in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health looked at 11 different cases to see how specific chiropractic care would affect the curve of the neck (cervical lordosis) and pulmonary function.

The authors of this study note that cardio respiratory activity is heavily influenced by posture and body movements. They point out that abnormal posture of the head and neck significantly influences respiration, oxygenation, and sympathetic nerve system function. They note that, "homeostasis of autonomic function are intimately related with posture such that when postural efficiency is optimized, not only is breathing also optimized, but other visceral and somatic functions are also seen to improve." In layman's terms, good posture leads to good nerve system function and proper breathing and heart function.

In this study 11 cases were reviewed to look for changes in neck curvature on x-rays as well as testing for pulmonary function as tested with a Buhl spirometer. Patient chiropractic care plans ranged from 18 clinic visits to 41 clinic visits within a 3-6 month time period. Patients ranged in age from 19-47 with 8 females and 3 males.

The results showed that after chiropractic care, for each of the patients in this study, there was a statistically significant increase in their respective cervical lordosis. A "lordosis" is the normal forward curve that should be present in a normal healthy neck. These patients also showed an increase in pulmonary function as demonstrated by increased measurements in peak expiratory flow, (full exhale).

The conclusion of the study stated, "The presence of abnormal posture of the head and neck, a commonly associated finding with vertebral subluxation complex, may considerably influence respiration, oxygenation, and sympathetic (nerve) function."

Do You Break the Rules?

Do You Break the Rules?

Turns out, the quality of our health is the result of a set of very simple rules. Play by the rules and you have the best chance for optimum health.

The rules are simple. You probably already know them.

Break the rules and you'll pay for it. Not always immediately, but eventually. Here are 10 of the most obvious ones:
1.You shall breathe. If you stop breathing, breathe in a shallow manner or inhale pollutants, there will be price to be paid.
2.You shall ingest nutrition. Quality food is needed to fuel, grow and repair your body.
3.You shall expel wastes. If you expel wastes too quickly or too slowly, you'll suffer.
4.You shall hydrate. Drink enough so you never feel thirsty.
5.You shall move. A sedentary lifestyle causes stagnation, poor circulation and hampers the function of the lymphatic system.
6.You shall rest. Your body needs time to renew and repair.
7.You shall adapt to your environment. The nervous system orchestrates every cell and tissue.
8.You shall love. Love your neighbor as yourself.
9.You shall forgive. Forgive others and forgive yourself.
10.You shall die. Many try to break this one, but it's natural. It's part of the plan.
Valuing your health and following the rules permits you to live a purposeful life!

Selling Sickness

Selling Sickness

Selling sickness

Your company's mandate is to produce a return on the investment made by millions of stockholders... if you happen to manufacture and market drugs, you want as many "sick" people as possible.

If you sell blood pressure medicine, a way to sell more is to constantly lower the threshold of when someone has high blood pressure and supposedly "needs" your medication.

If you sell cholesterol-lowering drugs, you can sell more if you can lower the standard used to ascertain that someone has high cholesterol and has a cholesterol-lowering drug "shortage."

If you sell medication to artificially alleviate the symptoms of poor digestion, you give it a name (how about acid reflux disease?) and hire a well-known celebrity (who doesn't use the drug) to tout its benefits. And you sell more drugs. Stockholders are happy.

Many fall victim to the marketing trap set by these huge corporations. Think about it. Their profits come from selling drugs, not curing disease.

The financial markets understand that there's a lot of money to be made by telling healthy people they're sick.

Symptoms are merely signs something in your body isn't working correctly. What controls how your body works? Your nervous system, of course, which is the true focus of chiropractic care. If you know someone who has been "sold" sickness, encourage them to find out about safe, natural and side-effect-free chiropractic care.

5 Most Dangerous Ingredients in Food

5 Most Dangerous Ingredients in Food

http://www.bewellbuzz.com/general/5-dangerous-ingredients-food

How many of you actually check the food labels before buying a product? Do you know that many of the ingredients used in packaged and processed foods can be detrimental to your health? The artificial sweeteners, coloring, preservatives can all be incredibly hazardous for your health, and it is important to watch out for these while buying your groceries.

Here’s a look at the 5 Most Dangerous Food Ingredients that you should avoid as far as possible:

1.) Sodium Nitrite – Sodium Nitrite is a preservative that is usually present in salami, pepperoni, ham, bacon, hot dogs and other forms of processed meats. The reason why Sodium Nitrite is added to meats is because it preserves the red/pinkish color of the meat and gives it a fresh appearance, and also prevents botulism to some extent.

However when ingested in large amounts, sodium nitrite reacts with the stomach acids to produce nitrosamines, the main cause for cancer amongst animals.

Sodium nitrite consumption is also known to trigger migraine pains, and COPD form of lung diseases. Non-red meats such as chicken, tuna are comparatively safer as they do not have nitrates in them.

2.) Excitotoxins – Excitotoxins are basically amino acids that also function as neurotransmitters in the brain. But when brain cells are exposed to this chemical in large amounts (through dietary consumption), they become over-excited. During this stage, the nerve and brain cells fire their impulses rapidly until they reach extreme exhaustion, a near-death state.

Commonly found in canned soups, diet soda, sausages, salad dressing and processed vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods. Excitotoxins are used as a flavoring agent in most such foods, but an over-dose of it can destroy the nerve cells. Since the protective enzymes in a baby’s brain are not fully developed, they are unable to detoxify the Excitotoxins that enter its brain. This is why pregnant women and young children should completely avoid foods containing even small amount of Excitotoxins.

The two most common forms of Excitotoxins are – Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) and Aspartate. Glutamate is a prevalent additive and is used in a many food products. MSG stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin, resulting in a drop in blood sugar levels. MSG can cause brain damage in children and lead to weight gain.

Aspartate is another excitotoxin that is widely used as an artificial sweetener in soft drinks, cereals, ice creams and so on. Aspartame (pre-cursor to aspartate) is known to cause various neuropsychiatric disorders such as panic attacks, mood swings, dizziness, blackouts and visual hallucinations

3.) Gluten – Recent researches have brought into light the various dangers that gluten can pose to human health. Gluten is the starchy substance found in wheat, barley and rye. Gluten contains Gliadin which is basically a form of insoluble protein that can trigger allergic reactions in certain people. Gastro-intestinal disorders result from Gluten intolerance.

Celiac diseases also known as Gluten Enteropathy, is a hereditary disorder of the immune-system. Consuming wheat, rye or other food products with gluten, trigger an on-going immune reaction in people suffering from this disease. Ingesting gluten in large amounts can cause irreversible damage to the protective mucus lining of the small intestine.

Approx. 90 million people in the United States are negatively affected by gluten, while 10 million are known to have gluten sensitivity. Gluten sensitivity can cause and aggravate conditions such as diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, osteoporosis, dermatitis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.

4.) BHA and BHT – Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) are used to preserve fats and inhibit the formation of yeast. Food products such as butter, chips, beer, cereals, dehydrated potatoes, meats etc contain BHT and BHA. Both BHA and BHT are antioxidants that oxidize the fats, thereby protecting the food products from going rancid.

However, ingesting these preservatives can cause serious health problems. BHT and BHA are known to cause metabolic stress, weight loss, liver damage, growth retardation and fetal abnormalities. These are also the cause of hyperactivity and other behavioral disorders in children.

Anecdotal reports suggest that BHA and BHT can increase the risk of cancer (suspected carcinogens) and get accumulated in body tissues causing several health problems. These are also known to cause liver enlargement and cell retardation. Up to 13% of BHT is absorbed by the skin, which can result in contact dermatitis and other skin problems.

5.) High Fructose Corn Syrup – High Fructose Corn syrup is known by different names such as Maize syrup, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, corn sugar etc. It is a high calorie sweetener used in processed foods such as ketchup, jams, bread, salad dressings, ice creams and even soft drinks. Corn syrup is made by an enzymatic process from the glucose syrup derived from corn.

Over consumption of Fructose can alter the intracellular metabolism and accelerate the aging process. Because it is metabolized by the liver, fructose causes imbalance in the insulin levels in the blood. Also fructose converts to fat more than any other sugar, leading to abnormal weight gain and obesity. It is also known to raise the serum triglycerides levels in the blood, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Keep the above mentioned “dangerous” ingredients in mind next time when you go grocery shopping. Avoiding these and other such unsafe preservatives and coloring agents can make a world of difference to your and your family’s health.

How to brand a disease and sell a cure

How to brand a disease -- and sell a cure
By Carl Elliott, Special to CNN
October 11, 2010 2:07 p.m. EDT

Editor's note: Dr. Carl Elliott, an M.D. and Ph.D., is the author of "White Coat, Black Hat: Adventures on the Dark Side of Medicine" (Beacon Press, 2010).

(CNN) -- If you want to understand the way prescription drugs are marketed today, have a look at the 1928 book, "Propaganda," by Edward Bernays, the father of public relations in America.

For Bernays, the public relations business was less about selling things than about creating the conditions for things to sell themselves. When Bernays was working as a salesman for Mozart pianos, for example, he did not simply place advertisements for pianos in newspapers. That would have been too obvious.

Instead, Bernays persuaded reporters to write about a new trend: Sophisticated people were putting aside a special room in the home for playing music. Once a person had a music room, Bernays believed, he would naturally think of buying a piano. As Bernays wrote, "It will come to him as his own idea."

Just as Bernays sold pianos by selling the music room, pharmaceutical marketers now sell drugs by selling the diseases that they treat. The buzzword is "disease branding."

To brand a disease is to shape its public perception in order to make it more palatable to potential patients. Panic disorder, reflux disease, erectile dysfunction, restless legs syndrome, bipolar disorder, overactive bladder, ADHD, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, even clinical depression: All these conditions were once regarded as rare until a marketing campaign transformed the brand.

Once a branded disease has achieved a degree of cultural legitimacy, there is no need to convince anyone that a drug to treat it is necessary. It will come to him as his own idea.

Disease branding works especially well for two kinds of conditions. The first is the shameful condition that can be destigmatized. For instance, when Pharmacia launched Detrol in the late 1990s, the condition the drug treated was known to doctors as "urge incontinence." Patients called it "accidentally peeing in my pants" and were embarrassed to bring it up with their physicians.

Pharmacia fixed the problem by rebranding the condition as "overactive bladder." Whereas "incontinence" suggested weakness and was associated mainly with elderly women, the phrase "overactive bladder" evoked a supercharged organ frantically working overtime.

To qualify for a diagnosis of "overactive bladder," patients did not actually have to lose bladder control." They simply needed to go to the bathroom a lot.

The vice president of Pharmacia, Neil Wolf, explained the branding strategy in a 2002 presentation called "Positioning Detrol: Creating a Disease." By creating the disease of "overactive bladder," Wolf claimed, Pharmacia created a market of 21 million potential patients.

Another good candidate for branding is a condition that can be plausibly portrayed as under-diagnosed. Branding such a condition assures potential patients that they are part of a large and credible community of sufferers. For example, in 1999, the FDA approved the antidepressant Paxil for the treatment of "social anxiety disorder," a condition previously known as "shyness."

See more CNN.com opinion articles

In order to convince shy people they had social anxiety disorder, GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Paxil, hired a PR firm called Cohn and Wolfe. Cohn and Wolfe put together a public awareness campaign called "Imagine being allergic to people," which was allegedly sponsored by a group called the "Social Anxiety Disorders Coalition."

GlaxoSmithKline also recruited celebrities like Ricky Williams, the NFL running back, and paid them to give interviews to the press about their own social anxiety disorder. Finally, they hired academic psychiatrists working on social anxiety disorder and sent them out on the lecture circuit in the top 25 media markets.

The results were remarkable. In the two years before Paxil was approved for social anxiety, there were only about 50 references to social anxiety disorder in the press. But in 1999, during the PR campaign, there were over a billion references.

Within two years Paxil had become the seventh most profitable drug in America, and Cohn and Wolfe had picked up an award for the best PR campaign of 1999. Today, social anxiety disorder, far from being rare, is often described as the third most common mental illness in the world.

It is hard to brand a disease without the help of physicians, of course. So drug companies typically recruit academic "thought leaders" to write and speak about any new conditions they are trying to introduce. It also helps if the physicians believe the branded condition is dangerous.

When AstraZeneca introduced Prilosec (and later Nexium) for heartburn, for example, it famously repositioned heartburn as "gastroesophageal reflux disease," or GERD. But it also commissioned research to demonstrate the devastating consequences of failing to treat it.

If all drugs were harmless, disease branding would be relatively harmless, too. But no drug is completely benign.

For example, Detrol can make elderly people delirious and may cause memory problems. Paxil is associated with sexual dysfunction and dependence. It also carries a black-box warning for suicide in children and adolescents. Side effects like these are a part of every drug. But they are never part of the brand.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Carl Elliott.

All I Want For Christmas Is A Stress-Free Holiday

Whoever said that the holiday season was the happiest time of the year never juggled in-laws, dealt with schedules overbooked with parties or felt bloated and tired. Let’s face it: The holiday season forces us to stretch our wallets, overindulge in things we know aren’t healthy, mingle with people we don’t really like and deal with exceedingly long lines, crying children and tinny music at the store.

In many ways, the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day have the potential to be the most stressful time of the year.

This doesn’t have to be the case, though. Just like everything else in life, you have at least minimal control over how the holidays will affect the way you feel and act. This year, make a commitment to actually enjoy and appreciate the holidays for what they are rather than letting them stress you out. Here’s how:

1. Prioritize. Before we even have a chance to hit Halloween, think about what you are most looking forward to about the holidays ahead. Do you appreciate the intimate evenings with your immediate family or is this the season to help those in your neighborhood who need it most? Keep those priorities in mind as you begin making plans, and don’t let those things that hold the greatest importance to you be lost in the holiday shuffle.
2. Just say no. Keeping those priorities in mind, don’t be afraid to say no to party invites, requests to cook for social functions or pleas for money to help any number of worthy—but wallet-draining—causes. The honest truth is that you can’t do it all—none of us can. Instead of stressing out about it, accept the fact that there just aren’t enough hours in the day or dollars in the bank account to please everyone.
3. Set a spending limit. Before you start shopping, set a budget and stick to it. You can’t buy happiness with gifts, so don’t even try. To cut back on spending, consider doing a gift exchange or making gifts instead. You may also decide as a family to donate what you would spend on presents to a worthy cause instead.
4. Keep expectations reasonable. We live in an age of advertising overkill, high-speed technology, blended families and financial stress. That Hollywood image of Dad, Mom and their two smiling children drinking eggnog beneath a perfectly manicured Christmas tree doesn’t exist. We tend to get sentimental around the holidays, and when the “magical” moments we’ve imagined don’t happen, it’s often a letdown. It’s perfectly okay to want a happy, memorable holiday season, but gently embrace that sentimentality instead of clinging to it.
5. Don’t disregard health. With the packed calendar and plates of chocolate, cookies and candy, it is incredibly easy to set aside your regular workout regimen and eating patterns for the holiday season. Make a commitment to yourself now to stick with your healthy habits over the holidays. You can still enjoy the occasional treat, just don’t overindulge. If you struggle to make it to the gym, take a few brisk laps around the mall before you begin your shopping. Be sure to see your local wellness chiropractor on tips to get healthy and stay healthy throughout the next few months but also the year!

The Chiropractic Lifestyle is a excellent way to get healthy and stay healthy!

This holiday season will threaten to be as stressful as the last but don’t let it be. Take control now — before the madness begins — Any Man, women or child is welcome to come into my office this season for a Chiropractic Wellness Checkup. My office will make your families first visit very affordable! ‘Tis the season to make this season the best one yet!

What FDA says about buying HCG online

http://www.ketv.com/health/23509649/detail.html

FDA Monitors Online HCG Activity

Hormone Diet Regaining Popularity

POSTED: 2:58 pm CDT May 10, 2010 UPDATED: 5:24 pm CDT May 10, 2010

The Food and Drug Administration said it's working hard to combat illegal Internet-based pharmacies that claim to sell HCG, a hormone that's part of a recent diet fad.

A number of medical spas offer the medicine, human chorionic gonadotropin. HCG is found in elevated levels in pregnant women.

Some dieters using HCG claim they can lose as much as a pound per day by restricting their calories. The HCG in their system then works to nourish the dieters by pulling from their bodies' fat stores.

But the FDA said some are doing the diet without a medical professional, and that's where it becomes troublesome.

Supporters of HCG claims it suppresses appetite and prevents side effects that comes with a low-calorie diet.

Others say the diet is unhealthy, and that buying it online offers an even bigger risk.

It's illegal to sell pure HCG without a prescription. Although some legitimate pharmacies do business online, it's difficult to tell the good ones form the bad ones.

Consumers must be extremely careful and intelligent about the decisions they make about the products they order and put into their bodies.

Please be aware of buying products online. They are not the HCG that Doctors are capable of placing you on. All Doctors (D.C., M.D., D.O., etc...) order their HCG for the Weightloss program from companies that follows guidelines and compliance. They are legitamite pharmaceutical and homeopathic labatories.

Thank you,
